What Makes for Good Education?

What do you think helps schools provide the best education? Funding? Hiring practices? Classroom subjects? School zoning rules? Longer or shorter school hours? Standardized tests? Something else?

First, explore your own opinions on this topic. Then, do some research on your own about successful education practices and share your findings.

Your post should include:
1. Your opinion about what facilitates good education in schools.
2. What information you've found online or in books that either agrees with or disagrees with what you previously thought.
3. The source where you found your information (a link or the title and author of a book)

You must post a comment answering this question by Friday, October 4th, and you must reply to at least one post by a classmate before class on Monday. You may feel free to post as many times and as much as you like beyond the minimum requirement. Remember, this counts as class participation and a homework grade. Have fun with it!

  1. I think that for a school to provide a better education they need to give more advance coursers (AP classes), and also after school programs. I believe this because if teens have an advantage of learning courses that are taught in college they will be more prepared for the future in college, they will have the knowledge and the skills on how to do a problem, and how to work on a college environment. “To the claim that they help students in college, it is true that students who take AP courses are more likely to succeed in college. But when you look deeper into the research, it's really hard to establish causation. It could just be that kids who take APs are kids who come from better high schools or high schools that better prepare them for college work, or they have better teachers or they're naturally more motivated. Very few studies use methods where they take these factors into account.” This article agrees with the point that if you take AP courses you are more likely to do well in college but that doesn’t mean the other student won’t do good too. They will, it just means that the students who take AP classes are willing to do better in the course in which they take AP classes. (http://news.stanford.edu/news/2013/april/advanced-placement-courses-032213.html). I also believe that kids should have after school programs because it will help them with the courses that they are currently taking if the program is based on the course, or if there’s an after program they enjoy to have fun that’s good too because they are having the students involve in program that the school is having. That way the student can fresh out his mind out of school and focus more during school hours. And maybe that program that they choose to take is not free outside of school so they could take an advantage and take it for free. And it also makes the student be less absent, and that equals to more learning during school hours. “Like afterschool programming, efforts to reduce school absences are animated by the Need to provide students more time on task in quality learning environments. Children On the edge of failure, in particular, can experience an academic boost if they make it to School every day and spend a few extra hours in enriching activities after school.” This sentence agrees with the point that I’m making. (http://www.expandinglearning.org/docs/chang_jordan.pdf) Both options are good ideas that schools should do in order to improve better education on schools.

    1. I like your idea that school should privide more AP classes to students in that they need more knowledge to prepare for college. It's easier for students in college if they have experienced the hard time in high school. However ,I dont think everyone would be interested in AP class because students have to take more time on it and have more stress.

    2. I agree with your opinion that a education should provide more AP classes.AP classes help students to develop more knowledge and better learning skills for college.

    3. I really like that the article you chose discusses the difference between correlation and causation. Students who take AP classes tend to be brighter students who achieve more in life, but is that because they took AP classes or because students who are smart and predetermined to work hard and be successful also happen to be the kind who might choose to take an AP class? Very interesting discussion! I would like to hear more students' opinions on the topic.

  2. Funding, hiring, classroom subjects, school zoning rules, longer or shorter school hours standardized tests etc....regardless these things, I believe what makes a good education is the involvement of parents in what the kids received from their teachers, make sure it applies and do follow-ups if necessary. Also at home, what the kids are receiving in terms of basic education such as, good manners, how to behave in society, how to approach a superior and know when to listen-up, and speak-up. All of that contribute to a good education. This relationship between parents and teachers, must be close and strong enough that those kids have no choice but be good. All these things mentioned above will be provide one way or another. In my research on the internet about "What makes good education" on Aprill 2011 there are so many good comments about this topic. However, one comes to my attention. It is by Patsy Kreitman who said that; it should be a requirement for all high school students to know how to handle a credit card and a checking account. I agree! because these things are part of everyday-basic-life. It' call discipline! Without it, the life of these kids who will happen to have big responsibilities in the future would be miserable. Regardless an associate degree, a bachelor, a master or doctoral degree I truly believe what makes a good education is DISCIPLINE!

    1. Baptiste Lissa i agree with on a good education is the involvement of parent at home. The kids are receiving basic education, such as good manner, how to behave in society, how to approach a superior and know when to listen-up and speak-up.

    2. This is a really excellent point, Lissa. Education is not the responsibility of the schools alone!

    3. I agree with your topic. Parents should be more involve in their students school and know more about the know leg and skills their kids are getting. That's why some schools do some open school night that way parents go and see who is teaching them . But some parents can't show up most likely because of work. But I agree with your topic.

  3. I think schools provide the best education by make more clubs and subjects tutoring for students. First, many high school students finish classes early and they go home to play games. thats means they are wasting time. If they join in clubs after school, then they will have more activities make them feel relax. students have positive attitude for study is important. Second, schools may encourage seniors and juniors to join in subjects tutoring, they can help freshmen in homework assignments. Therefore, schools need more funding to open clubs and subject tutoring. Schools also can award some students who are get the good grade, because I believe awards can make students motivate to learn. ''How to Start an After School Club'' this article that agree with what I thought. The author talk about that they provide a Pokemon club could involve creative writing, original games, books, and songs about those little colorful creatures. Those of idears are helpful for students. (http://k6educators.about.com/od/helpfornewteachers/a/startclub.htm) However, I think the standardized test is important to students, because it will organzied what you learnd. For example, when you get a text back you will know some questions you don't understand, then you can focus on you weakness and go to the tutoring. In the article''Standardized Test Preparation for Elementary'' , the author said that teachers and students are like the standardized test even they have stress. Tests are necessary to measure students’ learning. They have motivation to prepare the test and they want to know what levels of they learn.(http://everydaylife.globalpost.com/standardized-test-preparation-elementary-3991.html)

    1. Two good points here, Jingyi. I agree that after school activities can pique children's interest and keep them thinking rather than wasting time in front of the television, but I also agree that what goes on in the classroom and seeing progress reports (i.e. test grades) helps students stay motivated and working hard; however, I disagree with the usefulness of standardized tests.

  4. I think a good education start from hiring practices and funding. These two keys carries a lot weight in education system.Hiring highly-qualified teachers is a key. Good education starts from Kingergartners to college. When education system fails to hire qualified teachers for every stage of education sectors. if we failed in hiring practice, we expecting not less than failure in future. When a teachers are not taking on merit. In the bbc news "What is the Key to a Successful Education System" by Caroline McClatchey says that in Finland, a teacher must have a masters qualification before teaching a primary or elementary school. I believed Finland country wants their children to have good education system from tender age. The children were under learning process and they deserved quality education at beginning. Another factor is funding because it is carry a lot weight in student life. i want to used my country as a case study ''Nigeria". In Nigeria, school lacks of funding. Some of our primary, secondary & University lack of social amenities needed for their educational career, such as computer, textbook, engineering equipment and science equipment. most of Nigeria high school, there are not laboratories equipment to perform their chemistry and physic practical. College students in Nigeria does not know how to operation computer and typing on Microsoft word perfectly. This is the level of education section in my own country. We are now in computer world. when a young graduate did not know how to operate a computer. It is very bad.

    1. Olajire, I strongly agree with your point saying that "a good education is starting from hiring qualified teachers" For instance, think about the human body, without the head the other parts have no functions, likewise for the education system, a good education won't be possible without qualified teachers.

    2. i like your point that funding for education. Yes,schools provide high technology (computer room, laborator). students will have more interest in classes. plus, teachers are teaching class more fast.

    3. The question is: If our education system is failing, then how can we be sure our teachers are qualified, since they were taught through our education system?

  5. I think extend school hours can provide the better education for students. Most public school average six to eight hours per day in the US. Also have many vacations during the school time.Actually, that's not enough for study. I think make longer school hours such as everning school and Saturday school for study in the class is better. High-school students need to study after school consciously. However, not everyone can finish the assignment on time or do well on test because some people just play games or have part time jobs after school. If they are required to attend in the extra school time, they have more opportunities to work togther and improve by helping eath other. For example, cover the lesson everyday and preview and working on the project. In the article"Extending the School Day"by Ron Schachter, students in countries such as Japen,China have considerably longer school days and months than America. Also, attendence is taken extremely strict,so many students have good performance. However, the cost is problem.Schools must spend much money to make the extra school time. Students can work together in classroom is better than working at home. It motivates them focus on study.Especially before the test, most students would not review at home or just do not have enough time ,its better to review together in the class.(This link can support my opinion http://www.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=3755837)

    1. I do not agree with your opinion. Students also need rest time for them. If they study long hours for a day, they will feel tired and do not have enough energy to pay attention of what the teachers say. It's a big problem for them, so arranging student's studying time appropriate is a good way for them.

    2. I don't agree with you.Jian yi, I think students stay long times at school they will cut class or absent. Students will be dislike school.

    3. I don't agree with it too. If the student feel dont have enough time for study, he can go attend the after school program or join the tutoring outside the school, otherwise force all the student to stay school for more time just will cause more unnecessary problem.

    4. Many students will dislike this point because they don't want to be in school longer, but a lot of teachers would say that it is almost impossible to teach students all the information they need to know int he amount of time we have now for teaching. Remember how important we said it was to have civics in the classroom? There are many important subjects that are not being taught, but where could we fit them in if not by extending school hours? Keep in mind that many other cultures do this already.

  6. In my opinion, I totally agree with the standardized test can helps schools provides the best education. It is a fair test which can measure student’s skills, knowledge, and understanding. Teachers can tell students how the test likes and teach them how to solve the questions. There are many types of questions, students can do simulation one when they are in the school. Moreover, it also can shows how the teachers and students performance on studying through the test scores. After that, they can discover what the mistakes they have, such as: teaching methods, classwork, and so on. They can change the insufficient things, and improve them. Students can know what the weakness knowledge they don't get, and they can find teachers or tutors to study. While they get next test, they will know how to do this kind of questions. It is a good way to enhance their scores. Through the test, students can measure how well the knowledge they get during the class or the semester. It is like a self-assessment. That’s why I think standardized test can helps schools make good education. There is an article that shows standardized test is good for students. This article clearly defined the advantages of the test.

    2. i think both of you have good thoughts about the ways that the standardized test help improve education. Standardized test does help students and teacher to understand their weaknesses and advantages better. In that way, teachers have more clues about helping their students with study.

    3. Many people, especially teachers, would actually insist that standardized tests are not fair. Rather than explaining my point about how the tests are much harder for some students than they are for others, I will just link to this comic, which I think demonstrates my opinion nicely: http://library.poly.edu/sites/default/files/image/2012/05/testing_cartoon.jpg

  7. I think good eduaction is people's ideology, morals, and behavious. Students are need to become a lettered person. In the school, a lot of students are uncivilized.A lot of students are say bad words. I think parents and teachers are most improtant for students. Parents can teach their own children how to become a letterd person. If parents give their own children good education when they young. I think is better. In addation, teacher teach students eduation in the school.I think some students are listen to teacher,or some of students are disobey.Good students will become letterd person. If students are disobey to school, i think school can adopt some punish for students. After that, students may obey to school. When students are very uncivilized. It can effect the school's reputation.First, principal need to know morals cultivation. Then, principal can discuss with theacher. When some students graduate from High School, they will chose college. When they parents heard from one of school's reputation is bad.Parents would not let their own children go. In the" What is a good education" by Theresa Camoriano, the author wirte a lot of idea for good education. I choose one of idea to support my oponion. It is 4th point.

    1. I think you're very right, Qin. While some students excel in spite of a difficult home life, generally, having supportive parents who teach their kids how to be a part of society and reinforce what is being learned in the classroom sets children up for success through school and later in life.

  8. One of the best ways that lead to a good education is to motivate students' interest. That will help students to develop their own way of study. It also develop their way of self-study experience. which will show them clear learning goals. But there's a lot of students feel boring while they're in class. and many of them were drop of school. How to make students feel interesting in class and develp their knowledge.I found in:http://www.cmu.edu/teaching/solveproblem/strat-lackmotivation/lackmotivation-01.html. This website shows us clear about the good education for students is deveolping by motivation of interest. For instance, students have figure out the things that they learn in class will be helpful in their life. It says:'..work hard...motiviate...in personal life.'which means students have to work hard to develop their interest. so that will be hlepful in theri future. It also shows that study will help students personal live. it says:'... know what goals..." in other words, students have to know how to study. which they will find the interrest in study. when students find out their interest, they will know which class they're feeling the most interesting. the website states they know how to "chose"the "degree" for their sourse. Lastly, the interest will deveolp the skill of knoeldge.

    2. It is very true that motivated students are likely to learn better. I am curious how one would create interest in a subject like math, for instance, for a student who absolutely hates it, though. Is this a solution that is really doable? I'd be interested in hearing other students' opinions on this.

  9. I think school zoning rules help a school provide the best education.New York City has a complicated public school system that's not easy to navigate. It has some of the best schools in the country as well as some that struggle to provide even a basic education. Some neighborhoods have excellent zoned schools, and all you need to do to enroll your child is to show up with proper documents. But some people may not be satisfied with their neighborhood schools, they may want to explore other options.By researching, I got to know that the city has an extensive system of school choice, and, depending on the age of your child and where you live, you may have have a number of alternatives. You can change from one school to another if you think the school is not providing the best education for your child. The new chief inspector of Ofsted also agreed with me on this. You can check the link below:

  10. I think shorter or keep the normal school hours helps schools provide the best education. right now children have way to much school already they don not need any more, It is already long enough. In a day students almost 8 or more hours for school, they need time to communicate with other people, they will not be able to do that if they spend almost their time in school.Do not break the system. students have enough stress now if we have to spend more time on school students will get more stress, they will lose focus and leaning will not be as effective. too much schools time make people feel tired and may lose interest with it and it would force students to overwork themselves.teachers are also poor because they have too much time of school they need to prepare enough work for students. we are still young ! our youth need a break!

  11. In my opinion,Less homework is a good choice to improve education. Many people thinks do homework is student's responsibility, it’s a essential thing for student. I know homework is for consolidate what the teacher said in class, its good for student, but too many homework just will increase their stress ,easily cause students got lack of sleep, and no appetite, those will serious effect their health. From the“ Student Homework more or less?” by Jacqueline Robinson, we could know that the fifth grade student has 3 hours homework everyday at list, and sometimes had to work until midnight. Not just student, also their parents will increase stress too. Therefore teacher should make less homework for the student, let them have more time to communicate with other people and play.

I agree that sometimes there is way too much homework for young students, honestly, but I think the teachers like to think it helps students retain information, or at the very least, helps them cover information they don't have time to get to in class. Additionally, in college and especially graduate school, students generally have hours of homework for each class. Do you think that less homework at a younger age will leave them unprepared for college life?

  12. I think a good education should provide more after school tutoring programs and Advance Courses (AP classes). The Advance Students should have the opportunity to improve themselves by taking the AP Classes. AP Class can help students to develop their College-Level Academic Skills, and also help them to decide their major faster. (http://collegeapps.about.com/od/apadvancedplacement/tp/ap-classes.htm) For the students who need some helps with the study, after school tutoring can help them. In the article “The $4 Million Teacher” by Amanda Ripley, it shows us that the high-school graduation rate in South Korea is higher than the high-school graduation rate in the US. Most of students in South Korea have been to the tutoring. Although Korean students went to private tutoring, but i believed that American public high school afterschool tutorings would also help student with their improvement. 1. I think AP courses are a great idea because they challenge students who want to excel and also help them prepare for college and possibly save money by being able to skip college courses. Perhaps challenging and encouraging students in this way helps increase college graduation rates, but what about the students on the opposite end of the spectrum who need remedial classes and extra help? How do we help them graduate? Not all students are cut out for AP classes.

  13. In my opinion, more after-school activities help improves education. A good education is not just about learning the material from classes, is more about the experience you get from real life. After-school activities can include physical development, volunteer events, different clubs, and etc. Different activities can help students in different areas. When students participate in physical activities, they get good healthy and improve teamwork. When students join in the clubs, they get to learn social skills and open their minds by sharing different opinions with others. Participate in after-school activities may also help students develop their self-confidence, especially for students who is not adept at test. Technology is facilitates good education in school , firstly technology is what makes the different between morden education and outdata education , as Microphone can help student hear clearly ,Projector help the teacher show the picture and is much easier to understand the epistemology and Computer help teacher and students organize and search data and information quickly . Nevertheless , we also need to crate a institution : "teacher‘s salary should relate with study result of students, and also a part of students have to stay after school for extra tutoring which did not study hard ."
And i agree with a article found on internet called 'How Does Technology Facilitate Learning?" by D. Jonassen|J. Howland|R.M. Marra|D. Crismond Pearson Allyn Bacon Prentice Hall .
