1. What do you think is the relationship between modern living and childhood obesity? You must post a comment answering this question before Friday, November 15th, and you must reply to at least one post by a classmate before class on Monday. You may feel free to post as many times and as much as you like beyond the minimum requirement. Remember, this counts as class participation and a homework grade. Have fun with it!
2. What could we do as a society to change these problems?
--------
I will give you a printout with this information in class next week, but here is the information for your research project:
Research Project
You are required to complete a research project for this
course. This will be a group project. You may choose any of the themes in Urban Reader for College Writers to
research, even if we have not covered the topic in class. You will be responsible
for doing the research, composing a summary, and practicing with your
groupmates both in and outside of class. Your group will be giving a
presentation in front of the class about your findings. Each member needs to
put an equal amount of effort into the project and speak and equal amount in
front of class for the presentation.
You need to choose a theme from the book and find three outside sources on this topic.
You then must summarize your findings, giving
credit to your sources with in-text citations. You must also list your
sources at the end of your summary. Your presentation must be 7-10 minutes long and your summary must
be at least one and a half typed pages,
excluding the source list.
DUE DECEMBER 2ND
1) Modern living contributes to obesity. In the olden day where many people ate fresh food directed from farm. The food undergoes hot temperature during the process. People walk from home to their farm or market. Children help their parents did some farm work in the farm. At this present time, the food we eat contribute to obesity. There are some can-foods prepare for minute. it is good for consumption. All this food can cause obesity, diabetic and heart attack in human life. The latest innovation of technology add to it. Parents and children are not doing exercise any more. They prefer playing game on their cell.
ReplyDelete2.a) We need to start from home. Parents need to show good example to their children because they are the leader. What parent did in terms of character or ate as a food, children will emulate them.
b.) Government needs to do a lot of awareness programs through the media house. People will know the effect of the food we eat or drink. The cause of this food to the human life.
c.) As individual we need ta talk to ourselves. We know better than each other. If we seen anybody eating or drinking any food that can affect their health. We can advice them on it.
I agree with your opinion on 2a. I think parents should be in charge of everything and set some rules around the house and outside the house . That way the children can eat and behave better
DeleteI agree with your 2b, because many people dont know how's some the food affect them obesity. The government have programs to teach people is a good idea.
DeleteI also think parents should focus on their children's diets because they are the leader. Parents' eating habits will affect their children directly.
DeleteGreat points, Olajire. I think the different styles of living between the past and today definitely contribute to the rise in obesity.
DeleteThe relationship between modern living and childhood obesity is that this modern era has a lot of technology involved in it. Children play video games instead of going outside and play with their friends or just sit inside and watch tv , also the way the companies make the ads now a days, they way they make the food appear on tv makes the children want it. And that causes them to get it when they have a chance.
ReplyDeleteAs a society we should make schools give healthier foods and we can eliminate the machines from the schools , only provide water from those machines . We can also set a time for children of when to play and when to have sweets. Is not always they get to do that when they want, we have to set a time and place for it. For example he can only play after a certain time , and he can only use a video fame device during such place. We should also make stores give healthier foods to the community around them.
I agree with your point: that the advertisements have a big impact on children by giving away toys along with the meal, that's make kids want it even more.
DeleteI think that set a time for children of when they play and have sweets is a good idea. Because we have a better habit for lives is important.
Deletei like your points that school should serve healthier food for students and reduce the food machines because most drinks and junk food contains high calories which may lead to obesity.
DeleteI think school only provides water in those machines won't be realistic. Because students need calories and energy when they are in school. If there are not any foods they can buy, they will feel hungry.
DeleteGood point, Luis. In the past, children HAD to be active if they wanted to play. Now "play" can involve sitting on the couch for hours at a time, and kids aren't naturally seeking out the exercise they used to.
DeleteI think the relationship between modern living and childhood obesity, is the fact that the technology is taking over our lives, and now we become paralyze mentally because,we doing less and less physical activity on a daily basis. Compare to childhood obesity, there are too many fast food restaurant at hand, and parents are too busy to prepare a nice healthy meal for their children, fast food becomes convenient for them which is no good for their health. Both situation, modern living and childhood obesity are resulting on one common point which is "Health Problem"
ReplyDeleteI think we could encourage more outdoors activities, helping kids to work harder by using their brain cells, instead of electronic devices, and change the food marketing. Parents need to sacrifice some time cooking for their family, they must be in control in term of the family's diet. This way, our kids can be free from all the toxic food, and be physically mentally active for the benefits of everybody.
Lissa, I like your point that encourage more outdoors activities for children, but many parents not enough to have time go out with their children. I think the government provides more obesity prevention programs is helpful for children.
DeleteI like the idea you have for use brain cells instead of electronic devices. If they do that they won't always stay at home, they will do more outdoor activities.
DeleteI think technology doesn't paralyze our minds, but it is definitely causing a detrimental effect on our bodies!
Delete1) I think the relationship between modern living and childhood obesity are the food companies and the high technology. First, there are many McDonald's, KFC...kind of these fast food are convenience for people. The food companies produce many new products with high calories each year. Children eat much of high calories food so make them obesity. Otherwise, children have less of time to do sports because they carry iphones, ipad to everywhere. They addicted to some games in phone. Some children don't even go out, they like to stay home play games. Some parents think buy an ipad for chidren is a good idea, because it can make them stay home and don't need to bring them out.
ReplyDelete2) There are many ways can change these problems. I think schools provide healthy classes for parents and children. Then they will know how's important of the children get obesity. Parents try to have more time to make healthy food for children, parents also teach them how to cook healthy food. Parents set a time for their kids only can play games one hours each day. Finally, I suggest that chidren to take some kind of sports class after school. They can look for some classes nearby their houses; such as Tae Kwon Do, Kickboxing, and dance classes.
I like your idea of teaching children to cook healthy food. This way they don't have to depend on fast foods.
DeleteI agree, Jingyi, the availability and affordability of cheap food is a huge contributer to our obesity problem.
Delete1.The modern living is affected by the higher technology which is the main cause of childhood obesity. Before people used to work hard to grow their food, used to eat fresh food and used to play outdoor games. But now we are so dependent on modern technology that we can get ready made food or fast food that are cheaper than fresh food. Children prefer to stay home watching television or playing computer games rather than going outside to play outdoor games. And this is why more children are suffering from childhood obesity.
ReplyDelete2.We can do a lot of thinks to overcome this problem. We should make fast food more expensive than the fresh food. We should go outside to play with our children. We should let children eat fresh and healthy food and keep them away from fast food. We should tell children about the causes and negative effects of childhood obesity.
I agree that technology have a great impact on childhood obesity. I also didn't think of the idea that we can make fast food expensive, where people, not only kids, buy fast food just because it's cheap.
DeleteI like how you think, Md. It is very hard for someone who is already overweight to lose what they have, but if we teach our kids early how to eat right, maybe they will never get to that point and we will have a healthier society.
Delete1)I think the technology and more fast-food restaurant are the main problems that lead to childhood obesity. Most family choose fast food to help them save time conveniently , so children would follow the eating habits which contain more total calories. Also children exercise less because the technology is developed. Children spend most time on using computers, ipods and cellphones after school so they don't have outdoor activities. These are the factors that contributing to the increase in obesity.
ReplyDelete2)Parents should try to limit how much time their children spent on the computer and make sure children have ourdoor activities with their free time.Eating habits is important, so parents shoud give more vegetables instead of other high-calories food to children. Also school can teach some food education which help them know what they are not supposed to eat, and make sure every student have physical education. School lunch should be healthier like more vegetables.
I like your opinion that children spend most time on using computers, ipods and cellphones after school so they don't have outdoor activities. These are the factors that contributing to the increase in obesity.
DeleteI agree with you that parents should lay down good habits for their children to follow.
Delete1) I think that fast food and high technology can cause of childhood obesity. Many children love eat fast food in order for easy. They don't need to do a lot of things for prepare food. A lot of children lack of exercise because they are sit at home whole day play phone and computer game. It can cause them become obesity.
ReplyDelete2) We can trying to solve those problems. I think parents should teach children how to cook, and parents can prepare healthy food for their children, Parents' eating habits will affect their children healthy. Also, Parents should give children more vegetables reducing children eating high calories food.
I agree with your opinion about children always sit at home whole day, and it will make them obesity. They need more exercises and eat less fast food.
DeleteTeaching children how to cook is a great idea! They they won't be forced to rely on already prepared, packaged and unhealthy food.

ReplyDelete(1)I think modern living can directly influence childhood obesity. According to the article, it talks about many children always stay at home to watch TV and play video games whole day.I agree with what the article said. Many people don't do exercises or go outside. For this reason, they can be obesity easier and faster. Moreover, many parents are so busy everyday. They don't have time to cook food for their children. Their children just eat fast food in outside. It's one of the other important reason for why I think modern living can affect and cause childhood obesity.
ReplyDelete(2)As a society, government can band some high calorie foods in schools, such as: chips.french fries, and soda. Parents can cook food for their children when they have free time. They can cook one time for 2 days meals. It's a good way for those parents who don't have time to do it at home. The way can save their time. Also, government can give finance help for some families who have not enough money to support their all family members.
i agree with your idea because we are thinking something in the same way.
DeleteI honestly wouldn't be mad if the government banned or reduced the amount of "bad" calories the American people have access to, but many Americans would never agree with this idea.
Deletei think the way we live will effect our life, which relate to chindrens' healthy. the old days, people always got their food from their back yeild or their farm. which today we call organic food. it's also mean healthy and fresh. forthermore, children were more from country side, there were many farms.they were doing many works. that;s why the farm children are more healthy. but today's children are eating too much junk food and doing less exercises which lead to obesity.
ReplyDeletewe have to figure out the better way to deal with the problem. i think that parents have to tell their children about healthy food. school or the government should limilt some junk food from children. also, i think soda machine in the school should cut off. and educate children to keep away from unhealthy food.
I agree with your idea about educate children to keep away from unhealthy food. Many children are lack of knowledge about what ingredients inside of the food, they don't know what kind of food will make them fat. So, educating them is a good method.
DeleteI also think schools should limit children's junk food intake. Kids are at school a minimum of seven or eight hours a day, and the school plays a big part in teaching them social skills along with nutritional skills, whether they set out to or not.
Delete1)The high technology and number of fast food companies in the modern life are causing the accelerating rate of obesity. In the modern day, many people spend most of their time on using electronic equipment, such as cell phones, computers, and iPod. Electronic equipment has all kinds of information and stimulant activities based on sport and entertainment. In that way, people don’t have the need to go out, but get information and play with their electronic devices. The fast food restaurants are everywhere around the community. Young people and children are most likely to eat the processed food, and office workers also end up on eating fast foods since they have no choice because of the busy work.
ReplyDelete2)School should teach the education about nutrition and provide healthier foods for students. Parents should set up a time limit on playing electronic device for children and start to prepare some healthy meals before head for their families. Government should raise the tax on fast food and soft drink, and limit the number of fast food restaurants around a community area.
Too much technology and too much fast food seems to be a theme on the blog today, but I couldn't agree more!
DeleteWe can eat without cooking food, we can go somewhere without run and more, people are getting lazy in mode living . Therefore , people absorb a lots food energy and do less work everyday , and we would like to prefer and easier way to live , is today's high technology and our natur cost us and our children obesity . BE a family person that can change this problem , spend more time with your family and cook for them ,play with them and go out with them .
ReplyDeletei agree with your point, people are getting lazy in the modern world.
DeleteI do not agree with your opinions in some ways. I think people are being busy rather than lazy. New York is a very busy city. Many office workers don’t have that much of a free time to go for food hunting. Some people are even too busy to finish the works during their working hours, and ended up taking those tasks back to home and continue on with them.
DeleteThe invention of food that doesn't have to be prepared from scratch was a great way to help working adults eat more conveniently, but I think you're right about the fact that not cooking our own food is contributing to the obesity problem. How can you watch what you eat if you don't know what's in your food?
DeleteI think the relationship between modern living and children obesity are quite similar. Currently as we live in a new technology world, technology itself is improving little by little. As for that, kids starts to interact with the latest electronic device at such a young age. They in start to use other technology such as watching T.V, playing video games,etc.. Also, the relationship between modern living and children obesity is that kids don't get active in anyway. Other kids may not have the courage or motivation to get out have fun.
ReplyDeleteI would agree with the article where it states that advisement should reduce on targeting kids toward junk/unhealthy food and creating programs such as having class teaching health, teaching how to play sports, and activities in exercising. If possible, have a program for parents on how to teach their kids how to be healthy since their the one who are responsible for what their kids do and eat.
I agree, kids start young now with the technology they have! They have no time to play outside and be kids because they have to catch all the Pokemon! But I think teaching our kids that physical play is just as fun is a really important lesson.
Deletei agree with you i also think technology has a huge influences and support on obesity.
Deletemodern lifestyle has so much to do with childhood obesity than most people think. the way parents are rising their kids now is supporting childhood obesity. with all these video games, phones, computers and entertainment at home is guiding our kids to an inactivate life. now most of the kids have so many technology at home that they dont bother to go outside to exercise or practice some sports. Another thing that also contribute it are some gender roles. years ago Mother were always at home cooking for their kids and caring about what they eat, but nowadays both parents are working and maybe don't have the time to really pay attention to their kids health. we as society could help them by making rules, giving them good examples to follow in our own house.
ReplyDelete"Guiding our kids to an inactive life" is a really good phrase, Melanie, and I agree that it is exactly what this technology is doing.
Delete1.) The modern living style is key to obesity by the advance technologies that have involved into our life and society. Also, fast food is always a huge problem to the childhood obesity. Burgers are cheap and taste good at the same time. Every one can afford it, but we don't know how many calories they have contained. Sometimes we just want to have it because it taste good and fast to have and enjoy it at the same time, so we just keep eating it. So, they turned out became huge eaters, who don't exercise much, instead their stomach growing larger. Modern technologies helped us a lot, for example the transportation system that we use every day, this have leading us to walk a little every day.
ReplyDelete2.) We need to cut down the fast food that we eat every day, we'll need some kind of technology that register our ID to the store, so that will prevent us from buying a lot of fast foods, government should tell them to do so. Also, for children, we better start at home, parents are always the raw model to tell their kids eat healthy, if the parents won't limit their kid, so who will?
i like your point of view and ways to change people be more healthier.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DeleteYou're right, Raymond, we enjoy the convenience of fast food without thinking of the consequences.
Delete1.people are getting lazy in the modern world. Most adult cause of busy with their job so they just bought some fast and unhealth food to their kids, instead of cook some health food for them, and day by day makes a lot of children getting obesity now. Also most of the kids are infatuated with games, and they dont like to do exercise, even dont want to walk.
ReplyDelete2. I think if we want to change these problem, frist of all we need to change their diet first, try to supply them some more health food, instead of those fast and unhealth food. second maybe we can set up some club or sports competition, from this to increase their exercise. and the last thing is limit their game time, let them go out to play.
The topic of adults too busy to eat healthy is always an interesting one to me. I think it is good than men and women are considered equal in the work force and can both have a career, but it is a shame that this seems to be one of the big reasons why our country is so unhealthy -- no one has time to watch what they eat!
Delete1. modern life means fashion and fast life. what kind of life is modern? absolutely right healthy is the standard of modern. now most people work in offices and no time cook after work or just be lazy to buy fast food. in the restaurants, some people they just put more vegetables that be more healthier, it is not. all fast food is high calorie it is not health. some people become lazy in modern life.
ReplyDelete2.it is very hard to change it , but still can do it, first let people know how important is a healthy body and let them interested of it , try change diets and do more exercises.
You're right, Zhao feng; even the salads at some restaurants can contain thousands of calories! It is very hard to eat out AND eat healthy, and we all know how much Americans like to eat out.
